On Hammer and Nigel: Philip’s full-term pledge, and the challenge to Ryan Mears

On 93.1 WIBC’s Hammer and Nigel, the campaign explains the pledge Philip signed to serve his full four-year term if elected, why Ryan Mears was challenged to sign it too, and what the FOP and Indiana State Police Alliance endorsements say about the office as it is run now.

Hammer and Nigel asked about the campaign's press event and the pledge Philip signed there.

The pledge is simple: if elected prosecutor on November 3, Philip will serve the full four-year term. Ryan Mears has not announced it, but it is the worst-kept secret in Indianapolis politics that he plans to run for mayor after this election. He is meeting with donors and laying the groundwork. If he wins in November, he would be filing for mayor in January and running in the May primary.

The campaign sent Mears a letter ahead of the event so he had notice, then challenged him to sign the same pledge Philip signed at the press conference. The insiders already know what Mears is planning. The point of the pledge is that the general public should know too.

The same event announced the Fraternal Order of Police endorsement, with FOP President Rick Snyder and retired police officers there in support. The Indiana State Police Alliance has endorsed Philip as well. Neither is a common endorsement for a prosecutor candidate. Officers are fed up: there is no partnership with the office as it is run now.
