Philip on the Hogsett question: bring in a special prosecutor

Asked on 93.1 WIBC's Hammer and Nigel whether Mayor Joe Hogsett should be investigated, Philip says the facts suggest one could be warranted and that Ryan Mears should step back for a special prosecutor.

Hammer and Nigel put the question to Philip directly: should Joe Hogsett be investigated?

Philip's answer, in the segment above: there is a lot of information there, and whether it is the sexual harassment allegations or the back-alley deals and rewarding of donors, it looks like an investigation could be warranted. The public deserves the comfort of knowing it has been looked at properly, and it is the prosecutor's job to handle that without bias and without fear or favor.

The problem is who holds that job. Ryan Mears' plans to run for mayor in 2027 are the worst-kept secret in the city, and they have put his office in a complete catch-22. If he goes after Hogsett, half the Democratic Party says he is clearing the field for his own run. If he does nothing, half the county says he is doing the party a favor before November. Either way, nobody can trust the result.

"He needs to step back and say, because of the appearance of impropriety, which is the standard here, we need to bring in a special prosecutor to handle the investigation. That way, either decision, go forward or not, people can feel confident that it's been handled properly."

The segment aired on Hammer and Nigel on 93.1 WIBC.
